Across the country, attacks on immigrant families are escalating. Families are being separated, our neighbors are being taken from their communities, and many are forced to live under constant terror that a knock on the door could mean detention or deportation. Here in Utah, anti-immigrant crackdowns have increased, courthouse arrests have spread, and the federal government has now purchased a massive warehouse on the west side of Salt Lake City with plans to convert it into an ICE detention center. But repression does not have to go unanswered. Earlier this year in Minnesota, communities organized mass resistance to a huge federal immigration crackdown. Workers, students, small businesses, and community organizations joined a massive shutdown that helped force federal authorities to scale back their operation. Across the country—including here in Utah—people joined the January 30 nationwide shutdown against ICE, with protests, student walkouts, and dozens of local businesses closing in solidarity. The Red Lines campaign is an effort to build organized solidarity across the Wasatch Front so our communities can defend one another. We are asking people, workplaces, congregations, student groups, and community organizations to commit that if immigration repression crosses certain clear “red lines,” our communities will respond together with collective shutdown actions.Moments like the January 30 nationwide shutdown against ICE are most effective when communities are already organized. That is why we are building this commitment now. Add your name to the Red Lines commitment and help build a network across the Wasatch Front ready to defend immigrant families.
If any of the following occur along the Wasatch Front, the Red Lines campaign coalition will call for collective action within 48 hours:
30 or more people detained by anti-immigrant authorities as part of a coordinated operation anywhere along the Wasatch Front.
Any targeted anti-immigrant arrest inside a K-12 school, hospital, or emergency clinic.
Capturing and transporting even one person to the planned ICE faciliity in Salt Lake City, whether it's for detention or processing.
These red lines represent major escalations that require an immediate mass response from the people. But every act of repression against immigrant families is unacceptable. We must continue to speak out and organize against every act of anti-immigrant terror.
